Saint Nicholas was a 4th Century Greek bishop known for his generosity and charity. In 1087, his relics were moved to Italy, spreading his fame across Europe, with a feast day devoted to him taking place on December 6th.
In England, Pagan traditions still continued despite the rise in other religious beliefs, and the story of the Holly King and the Oak King, who fought to determine who would rule for the next six months, was told at Winter Solstice or Yule. Over time, the Holly King transformed into 'Father Christmas'; a green-robed man with a crown of Holly, and in the late 1800s began to develop into something more familiar to us today.
In Victorian times, 'Father Christmas' paintings pictured him wearing a traditional green outfit which incorporated some of the nature-based Pagan beliefs which came before him. Later, he was depicted in red to represent the Bishop robes worn by Saint Nicholas himself, and in the 1930s, when Coca-Cola's advertising campaign pictured him in a fully red outfit, it became part of popular culture and developed into the Santa Claus we know today!
No matter what he is known as, the story behind Santa Claus is a wonderful mixture of folklore, religion and beliefs from all over the Western world.
Our Traditional Santa ghost sports his green outift complete with hat, as well as a beard flecked with glittery frost which gathers on his longest night of the year, Christmas Eve.
Each Kent Coast Ghost is carefully handcrafted from clay and goes through several processes, which include drying, sanding, sealing, painting, and finally varnishing, (dependent on the final finish).
We don't use moulds to create Kentish ghosts; every feature is added by hand using traditional clay tools, and this gives each ghost its own unique features. Some of our ghosts are not perfectly straight, or may have different expressions in their eyes and faces, and each ghost is individually hand-painted so may contain slightly different patterning to the ghost pictured.
All of our ghosts will be sent in a gift box with a Certificate of Authenticity especially for your ghost, and yours alone. These are put in a special envelope sealed with our very own special spooky wax seal ready for the Ghost Post to deliver them to their new Ghost Host!
